Abstract
402,989. Switches, partly electromagnetic ; thermal switches. SCHMIDINGER, J. P., 2808, 35th Street, Long Island, New York, U.S.A. April 18, 1933, No. 11349. Convention date, April 19, 1932. [Class 38 (v).] A thermal switch comprises a magnet which tends to hold the contacts in engagement, and a resistance element 20, which, when cold, maintains the contacts apart and, when heated, allows them to be brought into engagement by the magnet. In one form, Figs. 2, 3, the magnet is an electromagnet with a winding 13 which is in series with the resistance element 20 when the latter is cold. The armature 12 of the electromagnet is mounted on a resilient member 19 which also carries the adjustable movable contact of the switch and assists the tendency of the electromagnet to close the switch. When the wire 20 expands sufficiently, the switch is closed, thereby short-circuiting the resistance element and permitting an increased current to flow through the winding to reinforce the contact. In a modification, Fig. 4, the electromagnet is replaced by a permanent magnet 30, and an additional length of resistance wire is wound around a post 34 mounted on a resilient arm 35 provided with an adjusting screw 36 for varying the tension in the wire 20. Additional means, in the form of a spring 37 connected at one end to the armature 12 and at the other end to an adjusting screw 38, are provided for regulating the periods of make and break of the switch.
