Abstract

401,703. Oil engines. PERKINS, F. A., 17, Queen Street, Peterborough, Northamptonshire. April 14, 1932, No. 10729. [Class 7 (iii).] In an engine having a combustion chamber in the cylinder head communicating with the cylinder through a passage, this passage is inclined to the cylinder axis so that the gases issuing from the combustion chamber strike the piston at an angle, and the fuel-injection .nozzle is located in a side wall of the passage. A cylindrical combustion chamber 14 is connected to the cylinder by an inclined tangentially-arranged passage 15, and the fuel nozzle 17, which is enclosed in a tube 25 in a water jacket 26, directs fuel towards both the combustion chamber and the cylinder, the latter spray facilitating the starting of the engine. The outer part of the combustion chamber is formed by a removable cap 33 and may contain a hot plug or an electric starter plug. In a modified construction, a valve closes the transfer passage 15 until fuel injection commences. The valve may be opened by an overhead rocker or by the pressure in the cylinder at the end of the compression stroke, and means are provided to hold the valve open during the working stroke. Specifications 270,673, [Class 7 (iii), Internalcombustion engines, Carburetting-apparatus &c. for], 365,617, and 366,008, are referred to.
