[Classes 87 (i) and 107.] A method of constructing a rubber roadway or pavement consists in forming a number of intercommunicating channels a in a concrete or like sublayer e, and capping the column - like members b formed between them with contiguous rubber caps c, the tops of which form the wearing surface. The channels, which need not form continuous lines, may intersect at any desired angle to produce regular or staggered rows of rectangular, hexagonal, or diamondshaped columns. According to one method, a wooden or metal framework or form, of a height equal to that of the columns to be formed, is placed on an unset layer of concrete and the spaces in the framework are filled with concrete. The framework is removed before the concrete is completely dry. The caps are fitted when the concrete has set and are provided with small vent holes for the escape of air during their assembly. Preferably, the inside height of the caps is slightly less than the height of the columns. In a modification, a lateral flange at the base of one side of each cap, fits beneath a shortened side of an adjacent cap. The tops of the caps may be plain or may be suitably moulded to provide a non-skid surface.
