Abstract

408,768. Cylinders. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., and VIGERS, R. W., 211, Acton Vale, Acton, London. Jan. 24, 1933, No. 2261. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (v).] The direction of flow of the charge, into the cylinder of a sleeve-valve engine, is regulated by providing partitions F<1> extending across an inlet gallery F from points on each cylinder wall between adjacent inlet posts C ; an inlet port G from an induction passage, behind the gallery F, is so arranged that whirling of the incoming charge, or not, is produced according to whether the engine is working as a directinjection oil engine or a combustible-mixture engine. As shown each cylinder has two inlet ports on one side of the partition and one on the other, and two ports G are provided, one of which can be closed by a slide valve H' ; by this means, in a direct-injection oil engine, whirling of the charge can be reduced to facilitate starting. Alternatively the two ports may be replaced by a long slot-like port and the valve H<1> by a plate having a single aperture which can be adjusted with reference to the slot-like port.
