Abstract
408,592. Spring forks. FAUDI, F., 190, Hansa-Allee, Oberkassel, D³sseldorf, Germany. Oct. 5, 1932, No. 27680. [Class 136 (iii).] A combined pneumatic suspension and damping device for motor bicycles, light cars &c. connected between the wheel suspension and vehicle frame comprises a cylinder 12 filled with compressed air and a co-operating differential piston 15<1> dividing the cylinder into upper and lower chambers 12<1>, 12<2> connected by passages so formed or so controlled that the resistance offered to the movement of the piston from the normal position increases progressively with increase in the extent of such movement. The passages may comprise grooves 18 in the cylinder wall, or apertures in the cylinder wall leading into external bye - pass conduits, the grooves or apertures respectively tapering or decreasing in size towards the cylinder ends, or the passages may pass through the piston or may comprise external conduits to the cylinder, in which cases they are controlled by a floating piston-valve. Fig. 1 shows the suspension of a motor-bicycle frame, the forks 6 forming part of a parallelogram structure including links 3, 10 connecting the forks respectively with the lower and upper supporting tubes 1, 8 of the steering tube. The air cylinder 12 and the piston are fixed in the diagonal of this structure between a holder 13 and a cross-piece 5 of the fork.
