Abstract
408,467. Malting; malt coffee. KOPPEL, H., 24, Lutterothstrasse, Miihlhausen, Thuringia, Germany. June 7, 1933, No. 16389. Convention date, Dec. 6, 1932. [Classes 14 (ii) and 129.] Highly coloured dark malt is prepared by bringing green malt after flooring and before kilning by spontaneous or artificial beating to a temperature above 30‹ C., advantageously up to 50‹ C. or more, and holding it at this temperature for a prolonged period, for example, about 24 hours, any drying of the malt being as far as possible avoided during this period. The air in the room may be artificially moistened during the latter part of the treatment. The malt may be arranged in heaps 4 on cores 3 of conical or pyramidal form perforated as at 2, which are set direct on the malting floor. An electrical heating element 5 may be provided, and also a receptacle 6 for water to assist in keeping the green malt moist. One or more pipes 7 are provided forming a connection between the interior of the core and the outer air. If desired, a vertical pipe can be provided. Instead of a core such as that shown, a spirally coiled tube heated preferably by electricity may be employed. The core may also be set on an openwork grid of wood or the like to facilitate ventilation of the heaps. The malt obtained can be used for brewing or for the production of malt coffee.
