Abstract
408,415. Mercury switches. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.- (Duncan Electric Manufacturing Co. ; 3rd Street, Lafayette, Indiana, U.S.A.) Jan. 13, 1933, No. 1254. [Class 38 (v).] A mercury cut-out comprises a porcelain member 16 having a narrow channel 23 passing through it and opening at one end into a well 24 into which extends an electrode 27. The other end of the channel 23 is connected to a tube 22 into which extends an electrode 26. A metal casing 18 is tightly forced round the porcelain member 16 to reinforce it. The whole is supported by a bracket 20 in a rotatable casing of insulating material formed with a funnelshaped part 35 and which contains a body of mercury. In the position shown in Fig. 3 the circuit between electrodes 26, 27 is completed by the mercury in the channel 23 and tube 22. On overload the thread of mercury 23 volatilises and is rapidly expelled from the tube to break the circuit. To reclose the circuit, the switch is rotated anticlockwise into an inverted position when the mercury all collects in the bottom of the casing. On rotating in a clockwise direction the mercury enters the funnel 35 and fills the tube 22 and narrow channel 23 to make the circuit. Circuit can also be broken manually by inverting the switch.
