Abstract

408,125. Typewriters. SHERMAN, J. Q. R. R., 1, Philadelphia Drive, Dayton, Ohio, U.S.A. July 22, 1933, No. 20735. [Class 100 (iv).] Paper feeding and guiding arrangements.- Register pins mounted in the platen roller are automatically moved into and out of engagement with marginal holes in the papers during rotation of the platen roller. In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 6, a platen roller consisting of a number of rubber-coated metal tubes 3 is provided with four register-pin units 4 each consisting of screw-threaded hubs for engaging the tubes, and an intermediate flange 6 having apertures 7 receiving tapered register-pins 8. Each unit is associated with a cam 11 having a flange 10 engaging notches 9 in the register pins. The cams are secured to nested tubes 14 which are mounted on the platen shaft 5 and are provided with adjusting-discs 15 having notches for engaging pivoted detents 17 or spring pins mounted on a disc 20 adjustably secured to a stationary disc 22. During rotation of the platen roller, the register pins are projected and retracted, only a few register pins at a time being in fully projected position, and the cams being preferably so adjusted that these register pins are located above the printing line. The register-pin units are arranged at different intervals to engage different widths of paper, the intermediate units being rendered ineffective by so adjusting the associated cams that the register-pins are projected when at the rear of the platen. When unperforated paper is employed, all the register-pins are rendered ineffective, and the feed-rollers 27 are moved into engagement with the platen roller by means of the release-lever 28. The feed-rollers may be automatically released from and permitted to move into engagement with the platen roller by means of a cam formed on one of the discs 15 and cooperating with the feed-roller spindles.
