Abstract

Shaped medicinal preparations, e.g. pills, tablets, pastilles and lozenges, are given a thin protective coating by treating with a solution of gelatine, keratin, sugar, gum arabic, cellulose derivatives, or the like and drying. The moulded preparations may be treated in a revolving vessel with a finely atomized solution sprayed by means of compressed air which causes a whirling movement of the articles. Alternatively, they may be dipped in the solution and the excess removed by draining or centrifuging. Heated air may be used to accelerate drying. A suitable coating solution consists of 60 parts by weight of a 60 per cent cane sugar solution and 40 parts of glucose. Substances such as disinfectants or dyestuffs may be incorporated. Examples describe the treatment of carbon tablets in copper vessels with finely atomized 60 per cent sugar solution which may contain 2-5 per cent of gum arabic, and also aluminium powder.
