Abstract

407,853. Automatic circuit-breakers and electromagnetic switches. MASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON, Oerlikon, near Zurich, Switzerland. June 29, 1933, No. 18517. Convention date, July 5, 1932. [Class 38 (v).] In a quick - acting automatic circuitbreaker having oppositely-acting holding and releasing electromagnets, the releasing coil, energized by the load current, detaching the armature from the holding coil to open the circuitbreaker, in order to prevent an increase in the holding current during release consequent on the diminution of flux in the magnetic circuit of the holding coil, caused by the movement of the armature, which might cause an undesired reclosure of the circuit breaker, a second coil in series with the holding coil is wound on the releasing electromagnet. An E.M.F. is induced in this coil during release by the increase in flux of the releasing electromagnet, this E.M.F. being opposite to that induced in the holding coil as the result of diminution of the holding flux. As shown in the Figure the holding coil 4 on the holding electromagnet 2 is in series with the second coil 8 on the releasing electromagnet 6 which is energised by a coil 9 in series with the main circuit. When the armature 3 commences to move due to excessive current in the coil 9 the voltages induced in the coils 48 due to changes in flux of the holding and releasing electromagnets oppose each other so that no appreciable increase in the holding current occurs and no tendency for a premature reclosure of the circuit-breaker will be present. If desired the momentary E.M.F. induced in coil 8 may exceed that induced in coil 4 so that a temporary reduction of the holding current may take place. The release of the circuit-breaker may be further assisted by a coil 5 on the holding electromagnet which is in series with the coil 9 in the load circuit and which is wound to oppose the holding electromagnet 4. A constantly acting force indicated by K may be provided to assist the releasing movement of the circuit-breaker.
