Abstract
407,586. Setting tubular rivets &c. CHOBERT, J. F. G., 3, Avenue President Faure, St.-Etienne, Loire, France. July 3, 1933, No. 18800. Convention date, July 5, 1932. [Class 43.] Joints between closely fitting tubular elements inserted one within another are formed by providing an inwardly projecting thickened portion on the inner element and displacing this portion under pressure so as to form a projection on the exterior of the inner element engaging a recess in the surrounding outer element. As applied to tubular rivets for making fluid-tight joints, a rivet 1, Figs. 3, 4, having a flange 3 is inserted in a cap 2 in plates 5, 6. The rivet has an inwardly projecting ring 4 which is displaced by a mandrel 10 to produce interengaging beads 7, 8 on the rivet and cap and thus secure the plates between the flange 3 and the bead 8. The cap may also have a flange 14. For attaching radiator pipes to the walls of discharge or supply vessels, the cap is replaced by the end of the pipe and a rivet is similarly set therein so as to grip the wall between the rivet flange and a bead produced on the pipe. For fixing nipples in the ends of pipes, the nipple may be provided with one or more such projections adapted to be displaced to form engaging beads on the nipple and pipe, or a sleeve 53, Figs. 14, 15, may be inserted in the smooth shank 51 of a nipple 52 and rings 54, 55 on the nipple may be displaced to form engaging beads 58 ... 63 on the sleeve, nipple and pipe. One or more axially spaced projections or rings may be provided on the interior of the innermost tubular element which may have a flanged or a shouldered portion adapted to abut against the end of the element in which it is to be fixed. A mandrel and co-operating ring tool or other tools may be used for fixing the elements.
