July 7, 1932, No. 19231. [Class 85.] In a draw works for well drilling plant in which two engines drive, separately or together, a drive shaft parallel to a transmission shaft and the rope drum, the engines are placed on the same side of the drive shaft, one behind the other, change-speed gears on the drive shaft meshing with gears adapted to be clutched to the transmission shaft, one end of the drive shaft being connected to one engine by releasable gearing and the other end being releasably connected to the other engine, as by a chain drive. A frame 1 supports two internal-combustion engines 20,21 driving a shaft 15 through gearing 22, 23, and a clutch 27, and a chain 25 and a clutch 28 respectively ; the engines are provided with a radiator 43 and a fan driven through a gear box 29 by a chain 35 and gearing 32, 33 from the engine 20 and by a chain 38 and clutch 34 from the engine 21. Change-speed gears 16-19 on the shaft 15 mesh with gears 11-14 loose on a shaft 10 and gears 50, 51 fixed to the shaft 10 are arranged respectively between the pairs of gears 13, 14 and 11, 12, and adapted to be connected to either gear of the pair through fluid operated clutches 46-49; a fluid controlled brake 52 is provided on the shaft 10. From the shaft 10, through gearing 9, 5 is driven a shaft 4 carrying a loose drum 3 adapted to be connected to the gear 5 by a fluid controlled clutch 6 and provided with fluid controlled brakes 7. The shaft 4 drives a cat-head shaft 71 through a chain 73. Below, and meshing respectively with, the gears 51, 5 are gears 59, 60, Fig. 5, loose on a shaft 58 to which is fixed a carrier 63 adapted to be connected by fluid controlled clutches 61, 62, to either gear 59, 60, whereby, through gearing 69, 68, a sprocket 65 and a chain 67, reversible drive is provided for the rotary table. A gear 56 fixed to the drum 3 meshes with a gear 55, Fig. 3, fixed to a shaft 53 carrying a loose gear 54 meshing with the gear 50; the gears 55, 54 may be connected by a fluid controlled clutch 78, whereby, during unwinding movement of the drum 3, the latter may be connected through the change-speed gear to the engines to obtain a retarding effect on the drum. All the clutches 6, 46-49, 61, 62 and 78 comprise clutch bands 78, Fig. 6, each adapted to be tightened round a drum 77 through a rock shaft 79 actuated through an arm 80 from a piston in a cylinder 82, a spring 84 releasing the clutch ; fluid is supplied to the cylinders through the shafts 4, 10, 53, 58 from couplings 88 connected to control valves 99, 101, 104, 106.
