Abstract
406,342. Creped webs. KEMP, W. C., 2658, Briar Cliff, Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A. Aug. 24, 1932, No. 23716. Convention date, Aug. 24, 1931. [Class 141.] A process of creping a paper web or the like includes steps which produce crinkles creating stretchability both longitudinally and laterally. In the arrangements described, a web of paper is first subjected to an operation which forms crinkles substantially at 45‹ to the longitudinal axis of the web, and is next subjected to a second operation whereby crinkles are formed at 45‹ to the axis but in the opposite direction so that the two sets of crinkles cross each other at right angles. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a web of paper 4 is led into contact with a film of adhesive substance applied by rolls 2 to a creping cylinder 1, and is removed from the cylinder by a creping knife 6 set at an angle to the axis of the cylinder so that crinkles 7 are formed. The web then passes over a second cylinder 8 which is tilted to receive the web and which is provided with a film of adhesive substance delivered from a pan 11 by means of a pump 13 and a pipe 10. The web is removed from the cylinder 8 by a knife 15 which is inclined to produce crinkles at right angles to the crinkles 7. The creping knives are each hollowed out to make contact along the edge with the surface of the cylinder. In the construction shown in Figs. 6 and 7, a web of paper 26 is led to a creping surface comprising an endless metallic band 28 passing over rollers 29, 30. A film of bitumen or other thermo-plastic adhesive is applied to the band by pick-up rolls 31, and the temperature of the film is controlled by a supporting member 34 adapted to contain heating or cooling fluids. The web is removed from the band by a creping knife 36 by means of which it is diagonally creped. It is then transferred to a second band 38 from which it is removed by a second creping knife 45, forming the second set of crinkles at right angles to the first. The bands 28, 38 may be supported underneath the knives by rollers arranged in echelon or, as shown in Fig. 11, by a travelling support in the form of a chain-like structure 48 with members 50 of channel shape. A bent creping knife is shown in Fig. 14 and comprises a strip of metal 55 helically arranged around the cylinder 51. One end of the strip is secured to a bolt 61 and the other end is connected through a spring 64 to a support 63. The strip is spaced from a supporting beam 65 by means of screw spindles each comprising two sections 69 and 70 connected with a turn-buckle 72 for varying the length of the spindle. The section 69 terminates in a jaw engaging the strip 55. The section 70 is pivotally secured to the beam 65. A composite product may be formed, as shown in Fig. 8, by joining, by adhesive, a creped paper web 25 having two sets of crinkles at right angles, to a web of textile material 24 such as burlap. Such a product is suitable for the production of bags or liners for bags. Specification 359,154, [Group VIII], is referred to.
