405,343. Free - wheel clutches. VRIENDT, J. A. DE, 18, Rue du Parc, Petite- Rosselle, Moselle, France. Aug. 4, 1933, No. 22030. Convention date, Aug. 6, 1932. [Class 80 (ii).] In a free-wheel clutch, the driven shaft 9 carries a toothed wheel 10 meshing with pinions 5 journalled on axles 6 mounted in plates 7, 8 freely rotatable on the shaft 9, and rollers 4 integral with the pinions 5 co-operate with grooves 3 and inclined surfaces 3<2> on the inner periphery of a driving drum 2. Springs 12 arranged between projections 11 and 13 on the plate 8 and in the drum 2 respectively tend to maintain the rollers 4 against the surfaces 3<2>. When the drum is driving, in the direction of the arrow F, the rollers are jammed against the surfaces 3<2> and the gears rotate solidly, drive thus being transmitted. If the shaft 9 overruns, the rollers 4 move into the grooves 3 and the pinions 5 rotate freely on their axles 6. The rollers 4 may be dispensed with, the pinions 5 themselves co-operating with the grooves 3 and inclined surfaces 3<2>.
