Abstract
Chlorhydrins of di- and poly-hydric alcohols are produced by reacting the alcohol with nascent hydrochloric acid. The acid may be produced by reacting sulphuric or phosphoric acid with a chloride such as sodium, potassium, calcium or barium chloride, and another substance such as acetic and may be added to facilitate the reaction. The reaction may be effected under pressure such as 2--5 atmospheres and the sulphuric acid may be added gradually to a mixture of the alcohol and metal chloride. The reaction product may be distilled to remove water at ordinary pressure the chlorhydrin being removed under reduced pressure, or the whole distillation may be effected under reduced pressure. The reaction mixture may be heated to a higher temperature such as 200--250 DEG C. to convert the chlorhydrin into its ether, a condensing agent, such as hydrochloric or sulphuric acid being preferably present, or the chlorhydrin may be partially or wholly separated before the production of the ether. Examples describe the production of monochlorhydrins from (1) glycerol, sodium chloride, sulphuric acid and acetic acid; (2) glycol and sodium chloride in a similar manner. The corresponding ethers are produced by heating the reaction mixture in each case with sulphuric acid, the temperature being raised gradually to 200--250 DEG C.
