Abstract
404,310. Storing crops; cattle shelters. DARBISHIRE, H. W., Plas Mawr, Penmaenmawr, Carnarvonshire, and MORTON & CO., Ltd., F., Hamilton Iron Works, Garston, Liverpool. June 25, 1932, No. 17964. [Class 5 (i).] Crops, such as those in ricks or stacked sheaves, are protected from the weather by an appliance comprising a central pole on which a roof structure is carried by a member adapted to slide up and down the pole, and to be supported at any desired height thereon. The vertical pole 1 comprises a metal tube provided with a cast iron foot 2 which is sunk into the ground, a packing 3 of concrete being provided at about the ground level : the foot 2 may be dispensed with and the pole provided with a coarse thread so that it may be screwed into the ground, the concrete packing being made smaller or being dispensed with. A sliding sleeve is made either in two halves divided longitudinally or, as shown, as two rings 4, 4a, connected by axially disposed plates 5 to which inclined radial ribs 7, stayed by angle bars 9, are secured. Roof sheets 12 are secured in sections to the ribs 7, one edge of each sheet being flanged upwards to lie against a rib and underneath a U- shaped flange on the adjacent sheet, the two flanges and the rib being secured together by bolts. A flashing 15 is secured on the ring 4 above the sheets 12, a space 16 between the flashing 15 and sheets 12 being provided for ventilation purposes. The top of the ring 4 is provided with a ring 17 of semicircular cross section over which a moulded rubber sleeve 18 fits, the sleeve extending down and over the upper part of the flashing 15 and up to the pole 1, clamping bands 22<1>, 19, being provided to hold it in position. A plug 21 closes the top of the pole. A transverse pin 20a is adapted to be inserted in any one of a number of holes 20 in the pole to hold the roof structure at the desired height. The roof, as well as the sliding sleeve, may be made in halves secured together by bolts so that it may be readily detached for transport. A device for lifting the roof comprises levers 22, 23 having jaw ends 22a, 23a and being pivoted together at 23e : the jaw 23a is engaged with one of the pins 20a and the jaw 22a with a lug on the sleeve and the roof is then lifted by depression of the handle portion of the lever 22. Alternatively, the roof may be lifted by means of a rope, pulley, and winch, by a cam lever mounted on a sleeve on the pole, or by other means. The appliance may be used as a shelter for cattle.
