Abstract
404,158. Winches. CLARKE, CHAPMAN, & CO., Ltd., Victoria Works, Gatesheadon-Tyne, and MACFARLANE, G. T., 16a, Station Parade, Northwood, Middlesex. July 13, 1932, No. 5595/33. Divided on 402,881. [Class 78 (v).] Derrick winch-gear comprises co-axial derricking and hoisting drums 11, 12 selectively driven from a shaft 15 parallel to the drum shaft 10. The drums 11, 12 carry gear wheels 13, 14 engaged by pinions 16, 17 on the shaft 15, and coupled thereto by cone or dog clutches 22, 23, &c. Unidirectional brake drums 38, surrounded by weighted bands 40, may control the downward motion of the load. The shaft 15 is driven from an engine shaft 24 through gear wheels 31, 32, 33, 35, of which wheel 33 is slidable along but rotatably fixed to the shaft 24 and the wheel 31 is normally loose. Sliding of the wheel 33 out of engagement with the wheel 35 brings dog clutches 36, 37 into abutment and locks the wheel 31 to its shaft, thus introducing a different gear ratio between shafts 15 and 24. In order to drive down the hook when light, gear wheels 55, 56 on the shaft 24 engaging the wheels 13, 14 are coupled to the shaft 24 by clutches 57, 58 actuated by the drum clutch operating levers after these have released the brakes 38. Warping drums may be provided on the ends of the shafts 10, 15 for use when the drums 11, 12 are held stationary, the engine link motion lever being interlocked with the clutch levers so that the engine can be reversed only when all other mechanisms are disconnected from the engine. For slewing the derrick, drums 59, 60 are provided to receive slewing guys. These drums are driven through clutches 69, 70, irreversible worm gear 62, and bevel wheels 65, 66, 67 from a pinion 79 fast on shaft 15 and a gear wheel 78 on shaft 10. Provision may be made for cooling the brakes and clutches, e.g. by wind vanes on the sheaves. The stop valve for the engine may be fitted with a foot-operated regulator. In a modification an electric motor is substituted for the steam engine, and one gear ratio only is provided between the shafts 15 and 24. The shaft 24 is used only for reversing, the shaft 15 being driven directly through worm gear by the motor spindle. The drums 11, 12 may be employed to control two standing derricks. The winch may be operated by remote electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic control. Specification 402,881 is referred to.
