Abstract

392,811. Reciprocating machines. TEVES MASCHINEN UND ARMATUREN FABRIK GES., A., 23, Gustavsburgstrasse, and KÍNIG, W., 71, Leerbachstrasse, both in Frankfort-on-Main, Germany. Oct. 3, 1932, No. 27434. [Class 35.] An electromagnetically actuated compressor comprises a mass which together with a spring system forms an oscillatory system of frequency equal to that of the alternating current. The piston 11, Fig. 1, is connected by a ball- and socket joint, an elastic steel wire &c. with an armature 10 carrying a movable core 6 and connected by springs 9 to a support 4 carrying a coil 8 and a stationary core 7. The support 4 is screwed to the casing 1 which is supported by springs or rollers to allow oscillation. Air enters through valves in the piston and is delivered past a diaphragm check valve 15 in the outlet passage which is spring-pressed to ensure sufficient pressure to prevent the piston striking the outlet valve plate 13. In a modification, a projection on the armature strikes a valve rod during normal action, opening a valve to admit air behind the diaphragm and raise the outlet pressure ; when the stroke is too small the valve remains shut and the air leaks off. The resistance to the piston may alternatively be increased by a dashpot, brake &c. Fig. 4 shows means for regulating the magnet strength to maintain the stroke approximately constant. Part of the compressed gas flows through a throttle valve 32 to a chamber 23 from which it escapes when a valve 21 is opened by a stop 20 on the armature, lowering the pressure in the chamber 23 and causing a diaphragm 15 to draw a core 34 towards a stationary core 33 within a choking coil 35 connected with the electromagnet. A further modified stroke controlling device comprises transverse springs on the armature in addition to the springs 9, Fig. 1, anchored to pistons subject to the air pressure admitted by the opening of a valve by the excessive stroke of the armature ; the oscillatory system is thus put out of synchronism.
