[Class 80 (ii).] In variable-speed gearing comprising twin trains with friction rollers 17, 18, Fig. 1, connecting pairs of toric discs 11, 22 and 12, 23, such as is described in Specification 254,341, [Class 80 (ii), Gearing, Variablespeed &c.], means are provided for producing frictional engaging pressure proportional to the load without inducing any relative turning of the discs. The relative turning which produces the proportional pressure is between the two discs 22, 23, which are splined together at 25 to prevent relative turning, and a third member or wheel 33. In the arrangement shown, the discs 11, 12 are fast on a shaft 10 connected at 27 to the engine and prevented from separating by a nut 50. The driven element of the gearing is a spider 16 supporting the rollers 18 which is connected to the spider 15 of the other train by a quill 13. The wheel 33 is stopped or restrained to engage the drive. Initial frictional pressure is effected by compression springs 31, one on each side of a web 32 supporting the wheel 33. Between the wheel 33 and the disc 22 is a ball thrust bearing 39. Between the wheel 33 and the disc 23 is the device for producing the proportional pressure. This consists of balls 36 confined in pockets and coacting with inclines 34, Fig. 2, on the wheel 33 and inclines 35 on the disc 23. The travel of the balls 36 may be limited by pins 37. The pressure device may lie between two parts of the same disc.
