Abstract
396,956. Retractable undercarriages. DORNIER METALLBAUTEN GES. and DORNIER, C., Friedrichshafen, Lake Constance, Germany. Oct. 12, 1932, No. 28492. Convention date, Dec. 8, 1931. [Class 4.] The landing-gear of aircraft is so constructed that the successive positions of each landing- wheel and its axle trunnion during displacement in a direction transversely of the longitudinal axis of the aircraft are approximately parallel to one another, each wheel when finally retracted lying wholly or in part within the fuselage. In one form, landing-wheels a mounted on stub axles c are carried in members d, each fitted with four rollers w adapted to engage in slots e of parallel spaced frames f, g, Fig. 1. Frames f, g are mounted for vertical sliding movement in upper and lower guide bearings k, l, against the resistance of compression springs m<1>, m<3>. Frames f, g normally rest on knife-edge bearings i, i<1>, about either of which they may pivot when a load is applied to one wheel only, as is shown in Fig. 2. Wheelcarrying members d are maintained in the landing position at the bottom of slots e by pawls q pivoted at p and normally held against stops t by tension springs s hooked in lugs r. When it is desired to retract wheels a pawls q are rocked out of engagement with members d by tensioning cables v and carriers d are pulled up slots e by cable means operated from drum o, until they reach the position shown at b. The wheels may be lowered by cable means or be allowed to fall under the action of their weight, pawls q being rocked clear of carriers d by camaction of the latter.
