Abstract

Carbamic acid chloride is prepared by treating ammonium chloride with phosgene at a temperature between 150 and 340 DEG C. The reaction may be effected by passing heated phosgene over agglomerated ammonium chloride, or by blowing phosgene and ammonium chloride together into a heated reaction vessel, or by blowing phosgene through a layer of ammonium chloride; the process may also be effected continuously. Carbamic acid chloride is separated from the reaction products by cooling, which may be effected in stages; residual gases containing phosgene may be returned to the process, if desired after removing hydrogen chloride. The phosgene may be diluted with inert gases such as nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, air and (or) hydrogen chloride.
