Abstract
396,818. Feeding webs. HOLMES & CO., Ltd., J. H., North Drive, Hebburn-on- Tyne, and TAYLOR, H., 52, Eastlands, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Feb. 17, 1932, No. 4744. [Class 100 (i).] In a control arrangement for feed-reel brakes a solenoid is energized to give a predetermined web-tension and means are provided for automatically varying the transmission of power from the solenoid to the brake with variation in the diameter of the reel. The reel C, Figs. 1 and 2, is mounted on an axle C<1> on one of those arms B which radiate from a boss B<1> keyed to an axle A. The axle C<1> carries a brake drum D in which are mounted brake shoes D<1>, which are applied by a rod E against the action of a spring D<2>. The rod E is connected by a bell-crank lever E<1>, adjustable link E<2> and lever F to a plunger G in a solenoid G<1>. The lever F is fulcrummed about two rollers H, which are mounted on a black J, which runs, by means of a roller H<2>, in the solenoid casing. The rollers H are connected by a link J<1>, two armed lever J2, J<4>, and link K<1> to a lever K which carries a roller K<2> running on the surface of the reel, and pressed against it by a spring J<5>. Then, as the reel diminishes the fulcrum rollers H are shifted downwards and the braking of the reel diminished. A solenoid and brake is provided for each of the reels but only the one for the reel in the active position is activated. For this purpose the circuits of the solenoids are made through contacts on an insulating disc N on the axle A. A complete contact ring 0 on one side of the disc N is connected to a conducting bar L in the axle A, and the three segments of a split ring O<2> on the other side of the disc are connected to three other bars L<1>, L<2>, L<3>. The bar L is connected to one side of all the solenoids by a contact M, and the other sides of the solenoids are connected to contacts M<1>, M2, M<3> riding on bars L<1>, L<2> L3. Two contacts P, P<1> are mounted to make contact with ring 0 and one of the segments, 0<2>, respectively, and serve to supply the current to the one of the solenoids which is in active position when the reels are in the passing or changeover position the brake is " on " for the used reel and not yet " on for the new reel. A variable resistance in the main circuit deter. mines the web tension, and may have a shunt which comes on when the machine is stopped so as to increase the braking. The fulcrum rollers may also be shifted by worm gear. not described, or the invention may be applied to other forms of reel stands or holders.
