Abstract
Clay or kaolin is subjected to the action of acids or to electro-osmotic treatment for the purpose of increasing the capacity of the clay or kaolin to bind cations, without decomposing any substantial portion of the clay constituents, prior to the incorporation therein of fertilizing salts, e.g. potassium or ammonium salts. The acid treatment may be carried out with nitric acid or with carbon dioxide with or without the use of pressure. The reaction capacity of the clay or kaolin may be increased to such an extent by the acid treatment that the subsequent action of the fertilizing salts thereon liberates appreciable quantities of soluble aluminium salts which may be recovered.ALSO:Fertilizers comprising clay or kaolin and fertilizing salts are prepared by subjecting the clay or kaolin to the action of acids or to electroosmotic treatment for the purpose of increasing the capacity of the clay or kaolin to bind cations, without decomposing any substantial portion of the clay constituents, prior to the incorporation therein of the fertilizing salts, e.g. potassium or ammonium salts. The acid treatment may be carried out with nitric acid or with carbon dioxide with or without the use of pressure. The fertilizing salt may be incorporated with the clay or kaolin before or after drying. Calcium carbonate may be added to the mixture of acid-treated clay or kaolin and fertilizing salt prior to or following the drying of the mixture. The reaction capacity of the clay or kaolin may be increased to such an extent by the acid treatment that the subsequent action of the fertilizing salts thereon liberates appreciable quantities of soluble aluminium or iron salts which may be recovered. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 fertilizers may apparently be obtained by adding small proportions, e.g. 1-,2 per cent, of untreated clay or kaolin to fertilizing salts. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
