Abstract
Green vegetable substances, or articles made therefrom which contain chlorophyll, are bleached with organic peroxides such as benzoyl or acetyl peroxide in the presence of organic solvents therefor which are practically inert to the peroxides, such as benzine, benzene, toluene, xylene or its homologues, lower aliphatic alcohols, benzyl alcohol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, cyclohexanol and its homologues. The process may be combined with the usual bleaching processes such as with hydrogen peroxide, hydrosulphites or oxidizing agents such as potassium permanganate. A hat body of Pandan-split or "Bowen" reed may first be bleached with hydrogen peroxide, then treated according to the invention and finally treated in an aqueous hydrosulphite bath with or without the addition of sodium pyrophosphate. In examples: (1) Pandan-split plait is treated with a solution of benzoyl peroxide in gasoline followed by bleaching in the usual way with aqueous hydrogen peroxide and hydrosulphite. (2) A "Bowen" hat body bleached with aqueous hydrogen peroxide rendered alkaline with sodium pyrophosphate is treated with a solution of benzoyl peroxide in ethyl alcohol and finally fully bleached with aqueous sodium hydrosulphite. (3) Vegetable materials such as Ruscus, Adiantum Cycas, moss, beech or laurel leaves, or pine twigs, intended for decorative purposes, are treated in a solution of benzoyl peroxide in ethyl alcohol and benzene or acetyl peroxide in benzene and ethylene chloride and finally bleached, dyed and finished.
