Abstract

386,376. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Pike, O. W. ; 1130, Palmer Avenue, and Hull, A. W. ; 1435, Lowell Road, both in Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) Oct. 9, 1931, No. 28128. Convention date, Oct. 9, 1930. [Class 39 (i).] Cathodes for electric discharge devices, such as power devices with grid-controlled arc discharges, comprise a heater in a metal casing which is formed from the material of, and is integral with, a plurality of transverse discs extending normally to the casing. The discs 35, Fig. 2, have upset flanges 37, 38 fitting one within another and forming a cylindrical casing for the heater 20. The discs are positioned by bolts 40 and spacers 41 - and are surrounded by perforated cylindrical heat-shields 28. The discs and other internal parts of the cathode may be coated with barium carbonate. The shields have end covers 24, 30 and act with flexible leads 31 as a return lead for the top end of the heater. The heater 20 is wound on an alumina rod 21 around a wire 34. In a highly-evacuated device or a device operating with an arc discharge in an inert gas or mercury vapour at 1 mm., this cathode is supported by channels 17, Fig. 1, from a pinch 3 - with heat shields 19. A graphite anode is supported by a rod 15 and a pinch 4 and is surrounded by a grid 8 of oxidized nickelchromium supported from a clamp 10 with a lead 11. The grid has a ring extension 12 lowering the starting voltage and a ring 14 preventing discharges in the space above this ring 14. A shield 6 prevents glow-discharges near the pinch 4. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a modification in which the cathode comprises discs with flanges welded to a cylindrical casing containing the heater, this casing being sealed to an iron tank, forming the vacuum envelope, by glass and metal cylinders sealed end to end. This subject matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
