Abstract

The wetting properties of mercerizing lyes are improved by addition of terpineol or pine oil together with a cresol or a xylenol (or mixtures thereof) and a soap-forming fatty acid or a soap. The said substances may be added separately to the lye, or they may first be mixed together and the mixture added as such. The relative proportions taken are cresol and (or) xylenol 85-95, terpineol or pine oil at least 4, and fatty acid or soap at least about 1 per cent, and the mixture may be added to the lye to the extent of 2 per cent. In the examples, (1) a mixture of cresylic acid and commercial xylenol is mixed with terpineol and oleic acid, and the mixture added to caustic soda mercerizing lye; (2) as in example 1, but with pine oil instead of terpineol; (3) commercial xylenol, pine oil, and oleic acid are mixed, and the mixture added to caustic soda mercerizing lye.
