[Class 103 (ii).] A shield for use between two aligned wheels of a vehicle, to prevent stones, nails, &c., from being thrown up by the leading tyre into the path of the following tyre, has one or more deflecting-surfaces disposed at an angle to the wheel track. The shield may comprise an upper portion of hard rubber and a lower portion of soft rubber. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the shield comprises an upper part 3 of comparatively hard material, such as vulcanite, vulcanized fibre, leather, or asbestos or other fibrous or metallic textile material coated with rubber &c., the base part 4 being formed of softer ubber &c. The shield is attached to the chassis &c. by a bracket 5, and may be inclined inwards from the front edge 3a, so as to deflect inwardly beneath the vehicle any stones, nails, &c., thrown up by the front wheel 2. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, and applied to twin wheels, the shield 3 comprises two deflecting-surfaces so inclined as to throw intercepted stones &c. either inwards or outwards and also downwards. The attachment brackets 5 may be provided with a number of holes, or with slots 7, to enable the height and inclination of the shield to be adjusted. Alternatively, the shield may be supported by a rigid pendant member from the mudguard, chassis, or body. The attachment member may be extended to form a metallic framework or backing for the stiff upper part of the shield.
