379,924. Oil 1 switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Turnpenny, W. H.; 12c, Wilkins Avenue, Albany, New York, U.S.A.) Nov. 25,1931, No. 32699. Convention date, Nov. 25, 1930. Addition to 377,707. [Class 38 (v).] Relates to switches in which a number of breaks in series are produced between butt contacts within an oil-filled explosion pot 1, the first break taking place between the "fixed" spring-mounted contact 9 and a floating intermediate contact 15 and the second break between the intermediate contact and the main hollow movable contact 21 as in the parent Specification. According to the invention, both the "fixed" contact and the intermediate contact are supported within the explosion pot from one end (the upper end) of the pot this end affording means whereby the whole pot, may be suspended from the lead-in insulator 7. In the construction shown, the metal adaptor 6 secured to the insulator has an orifice in the portion 5 in which is bolted a plate 8 carrying a spring- housing for the "fixed" plunger contact 9 and a number of similar housings for the guide rods 18 of a spider 17 on which the intermediate contact 15 is fixed. The renewable contact tip 21 is mounted on the tubular moving contact 16 and abuts against the intermediate contact. An insulating shield 24 may surround the metal parts. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), in which a minimum of metal parts is employed, a heavy insulating plate in which the "fixed" contact is resiliently guided takes the place of the metal plate 5 and is bolted between the mouth of the explosion pot and an inner chamber formed in the adaptor to accommodate the plunger springs. A pin mounted in this inner chamber limits the upward movement of the fixed contact. Specification 343,824 is referred to.
