Abstract

378,216. Cylinders ; valve gear. LISTER & CO., Ltd., R. A. and SANDERS, A. F., Victoria Iron Works, Long Street, Dursley, Gloucestershire. Aug. 26, 1931, No. 23991. [Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii), and 7 (vi).] The push rods 8 of the valve gear of an overhead valve engine, converted from a side valve engine by replacing the cylinder head, are enclosed in sleeves 10 which fit into, or replace, the original side-valve guides ; the push rods are thus protected from gas passing through passages 2 aligned with the original valve seats 3. A compression-ignition engine, having combustion chambers 13 connected to the cylinder by a tangential passage 14, is shown; a fuel injector 11, and a valve 12 for adjusting clearance, are provided. A side-valve sparkignited engine is thus converted into an overhead-valve compression-ignition engine. The valve lift may be varied by replacing the camshaft or by providing unequal-armed rockers. The Provisional Specification describes the push rods 8 as sliding in the original valve guides, additional guides being provided where the push rods pass through the head.
