Abstract
378,174. Cycle spring frames. DOWNS, N. T. and NEW IMPERIAL MOTORS, Ltd., Spring Road, Hall Green, Birmingham. July 14, 1931, No. 20160. [Class 136 (iii).] In a spring frame for motor and other cycles, of the type in which the rear wheel is carried by a structure formed of a pair of triangulated members pivoted to the main or front part of the frame, the pivot spindle is mounted in a transverse bearing member secured to a duplex or twin tube upright member of the front frame, the ends of the bearing member being extended beyond the duplex member to provide chambers which accommodate antifriction bearings for the spindle. Two parallel triangulated wheelcarrying members f, Figs. 1 and 2, are fixed to a spindle e<2> turning on tapered roller bearings mounted in enlargements e<1> at the ends of a transverse bearing member e, which is secured to a twin-tube upright member d, d<1> of the front frame. The bearings are adjusted by fingeroperated discs on the ends of the enlargements el. The pivotal movement is communicated to two compression springs a by tubular members b<2>, and to a pair of friction-disc vibration dampers b by links b<1>, some of the friction discs being secured to the front frame members d, d<1> and the others to the links b<1>, the spindle d<2> of which is mounted in a transverse sleeve on the members d, d<1>. Rubber buffers g on the front frame serve as cushions for the members f. The axes of the rear wheel spindle h, the spindle e<2> and the driving-sprocket spindle j are in alignment when the frame springs are normally loaded.
