Abstract
<PICT:0377239/III/1> Diamonds are produced artificially from melts capable of yielding carbon in a free condition by subjecting the melt to increases and decreases of pressure, the decreases in pressure being made more rapidly than the increases. Amorphous carbon, e.g. graphite, is added to the melt, which may be of iron, nickel, cobalt, silver or silicates, together with a carbon compound, e.g. solid carbon dioxide or liquid carbon monoxide, also supplied during the operation. The final temperature attained is about 1000 DEG C. and the pressure may vary from 500 atmospheres to a final pressure of 15000 atmospheres. The melt is preferably composed of materials which act catalytically and easily dissolve the carbon compounds, e.g. iron, nickel, cobalt and their oxides. In an example, a melt consisting of 60 to 90 per cent of iron filings, 25 to 5 of blast furnace slag, and 15 to 5 of amorphous carbon is placed in a chamber 5 in a steel block 1 together with 30 per cent of solid carbon dioxide. Secured to the upper block 1 by insulated bolts 8 and separated therefrom by an insulating layer 4 is a lower steel block 2, a tubular passage 10 for carbon monoxide or dioxide being provided therein. Pressure is furnished by a hydraulic ram 3 provided with packing 9 and also by the gas supplied. Heating is effected by the resistance of the blocks 1, 2 to current supplied by leads 6, 7. In operation, the melt is liquefied by heating to about 1000 DEG C. and a pressure of 5000 atmospheres is applied, some of the carbon and the carbon dioxide dissolved giving rise to the production of carbon monoxide. Pressure is now increased to 15000 atmospheres over a period of 90 seconds during which time carbon monoxide is converted to carbon and dioxide. After a further period of 10 to 20 seconds, the heating and pressure are simultaneously interrupted, the sudden release of pressure which is effected serving to prevent carbon in the diamond form reverting to the amorphous form. This procedure is repeated three or four times.
