Abstract
Sintered hard alloys for tools consist of tungsten carbide with p a carbon content of about 3-7 per cent, up to 20 per cent of an element such as iron, nickel, cobalt, manganese, or silicon, and a total of 0,01-30 per cent of one or more carbides of vanadium, niobium, and tantalum. An example contains 94 per cent of tungsten mono-carbide, 4 per cent of cobalt, and 2 per cent of vanadium carbide. The alloys may be made by adding the vanadium &c. carbide to a mixture of the tungsten carbide and iron &c., or by adding vanadium &c. and carbon to such a mixture, the vanadium &c. carbide being then formed during the sintering process.
