Abstract

360,168. Excluding foreign matter from bearings. HORDERN, H. M., War Office, London. Oct. 18, 1930, No. 31305. [Class 12 (i).]. Oscillating bearings are sealed by rubber or other resilient bushes the surfaces of which adhere to the relatively moving parts. Fig. 1 shows a ball race 1 sealed by two sleeves 5 compressed between so as to adhere to the walls 3, 4 of the race parts. The sleeves may be formed with radial or circular corrugations or made with inner and outer flanges to increase flexibility. The sleeves may be applied to plain or roller bearings and may be arranged to separate the main bearing surfaces when the load is removed. In Fig. 4, resilient washers 5 adhere to the flat end surfaces in a knuckle-joint. Two or more sleeves or washers may be used together with rigid separating pieces such as the discs 23, Fig. 4. When applied to the bearings of a semi-rotary pump the washers form a stuffing-box substitute. The invention is also applicable to knife-edge pivots and thrust bearings. The rubber may be caused to adhere by compression or vulcanization or the metal surfaces may be coated with copper or a copper alloy.
