Abstract
369,907. Suction rolls for papermaking machines. PAUGH, W. H. M., 101, Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio, U.S.A. Dec. 29, 1930, No. 39061. [Class 96.] In a paper-making machine having a suction roll normally operative in a loop of a forming- wire dependent from a second roll positioned above the level of the suction roll, to facilitate wire-changing, the suction roll is moved bodily out of the loop of the wire independently of the rest of the machine and transversely of the machine frame. Converging wires 2, Fig. 1, pass round suction forming-rolls 1, a guide 3 being in the lower part of one wire and a suction roll 4 in the other, another suction roll 5 transferring the two-ply web to a press felt 6. The roll 4 is normally supported in the frame at one end with a removable part 10, Fig. 5, and at the other in a bearing carriage 11 resting on a pedestal 17, the bearings 7, 8 for the roll, between which is a driving gear 9, being mounted on the carriage 11. To change the wire, the roll 5 is slid away from the loop by hand-rotated screws engaging blocks 18 to which it is secured, the deckles are moved back, tensioning rolls 23 are taken out, and a rod 14 on which rests parallel channel bars 12 pivoted at 13 is raised by a jack 14<1> to engage the bars 12 with the wheels 16 of the carriage 11 which thus runs down a slight incline. The roll 1 on a pivoted arm 19 is then swung outwardly, the wire changed, the roll 1 replaced with the wire 2 hanging as a loop into which is run the roll 4, the jack 14<1> is lowered, and the other rolls replaced.
