Abstract

369,032. Cutting paper. BECKMAN, H. W., 13, Fricksgatan, Malm÷, Sweden. April 17, 1931, No. 11374. Convention date, April 24, 1930. [Class 31 (i).] Stationary-cutter machines.-In a machine for making cross-bottom bags, blanks are cut from a paper web, which is continuously fed and shaped to tubular form, and the tubular blanks are fed to the periphery of a rotating drum to be clamped thereon by transverse bars &c., while folding devices provided on the drum operate during its rotation to open the bottom end of each tubular blank and fold a flap thereof outwardly over the transverse rib &c., on to the outer face thereof. Feed rollers 4, 5, Fig. 2, separable for the insertion of the paper web, draw the web from a roll on a shaft 2 past a friction roll 15 and gumming device 17, adjustable across the web, to a plate 22 around which the web is formed into a tube. At the further end of the plate 22, a thumb notch forming a flap 88, Fig. 24, is cut in the web by a rotating knife 26 carried by an adjustable arched support 28 pivoted to a second arched support 39 in which the upper of a pair of draw rolls 33, 34 is journalled. The lower roller 34 comprises a pair of rubber-covered discs and a central similar disc which rotates idly to press the glued seam of the tube. The rolls 33, 34 are adjacent the main drive shaft 46 and between them and this shaft the tube is severed into blanks by a rotary knife 50, the tube being tensioned during the cutting by being clamped between belts 59, Fig. 9, which pass around pulleys 57 on the shaft 46, and a portion 63 of a roller 60 having different portions of its circumference of different radii. By drawing the web more quickly past the notching device 26, longer blanks are formed and for this purpose, the rolls 33, 34 are driven from a belt 49, Fig. 2, encircling two oppositely coned pulleys 47, 48, the position of the belt determining the speed of the rolls. The knife 50 is adapted to keep pace with the blanks by providing its spindle 54 with a disc 75, Fig. 9, having a guideway 74. A projection on another continuously rotating disc 71 engages in the guideway to rotate the disc 75, the disc 71 being mounted in an arm 68 adjustable towards or away from the spindle 54 by a screw 65.
