Abstract

<PICT:0366066/III/1> <PICT:0366066/III/2> In the manufacture of hydrogen either by the decomposition of hydrocarbons, or by their interaction with steam or carbon dioxide, the reaction takes place in two stages in a generator comprising four packed chambers, two of which are used only as heat regenerating chambers, and two only as reaction chambers. A circular shaft may be divided into quadrants, Fig. 1 (31475/30), 2 and 3 being reaction chambers and 1 and 4 heat regenerators, an arrangement which obviates heat losses, the gases travelling alternately in different directions in adjacent compartments. The apparatus is heated after each "make" by burning a fuel gas in one chamber and passing it through the others. In another arrangement, during the "blow" air is supplied through pipe 16, heated in regenerator 1, and is used to burn gas from inlets 2 in a primary combustion chamber 3, the hot gases passing through one reaction chamber 4 and being supplied with more gas from burners 5. The hot gases pass through a second reaction chamber 7 and are led off by a stack 9 from a regenerator 8. During the "make" steam is admitted through pipe 12 and mixed with fuel from an injector 10, and the mixture passes through the reaction chambers 7 and 4 to an outlet 14. The slag is collected in a chamber 6 and slag pit 15.
