Abstract
<PICT:0364401/III/1> High-boiling hydrocarbon oils are vaporized at a temperature below 900 DEG F. and passed with hydrogen through a heat-insulated catalytic reaction zone maintained above 900 DEG F. solely by the heat of reaction. Oil is fed through a heating coil 3 into a lagged drum packed with catalytic material. A second drum 8 may be used in series, in parallel, or alternately with the first. Hydrogen is admitted through the pipe 14, and if desired, by the pipes 15, 16. The products pass by pipe 9 either directly to a condenser 20, or by pipe 22 into fractionating tower 23. Gas is removed by a pipe 28, purified in a system 29 and pumped back to the hydrogen main 13. In starting up, electric heaters may be used in the drums until the heat evolved by the reaction is sufficient to maintain the temperature.
