[Class 8(ii).] In an apparatus for generating and storing non-oxidizing gases such as combustion products from an internal-combustion machine, the non-oxidizing quality of the gases is determined by measuring the proportion of carbon dioxide, and the gases are diverted when this proportion falls below a certain limit. In the apparatus shown, the pistons 1g of an internal-combustion cylinder 1c and a pump cylinder 1d are connected to the same crank shaft 1e. The combustion products from the cylinder 1c pass through a scrubber lw to the pump cylinder 1d, from which they are expelled through a non-return valve 1r and a conduit 5a to a storage vessel 4g. The conduit 5a is provided with a valve 5c, normally opened by a spring 5y, leading to the atmosphere, and with a valve 5e, normally closed, leading to the storage vessel 4g. A branch 5h on the conduit 5a leads to a carbon dioxide indicator 5i of the Orsat type, operated by a motor 5j and provided with an indicating scale 5k on which moves a pointer 5n. When the pointer engages an adjustable contact 5m, current is supplied to a solenoid 5q, actuating a switch which closes the circuit 5s of solenoids 5t, 5u by which the valve 5c is closed and the valve 5e, leading to the storage vessel, is opened.
