Abstract
359,406. Granulating slag. ALLEN, F. B., 225, South 15th Street, Philadelphia, U.S.A. July 16, 1930, No. 21457. Addition to 358,527. [Class 82 (ii).] The apparatus for granulating slag claimed in the parent Specification is modified by the provision of a plurality of sets of disintegrating nozzles, the flow of water through each set of nozzles being independently controllable, and by the provision of one or more breaking plates against which the slag is thrown by the disintegrating jets before falling into the fluid conveyer. Molten slag falls from a spout 1 into a disintegrating chamber on the exterior of which is a manifold 7 containing sets of nozzles 8, 9 fed by pipes 10, 11 with water at high pressure, the flow through each of the sets of nozzles being independently controlled by cocks 12, 13. The slag is thrown by the jets against breaking plates 4, 5 and falls into a fluid conveyer formed in a sluiceway by water jets from a nozzle box 14 which carries it against a breaking plate 6 from which it falls into a main sluiceway 3. The sets of nozzles or some of them are arranged so that their height may be adjusted if the height of the slag spout in the furnace is varied, for example by raising or lowering the plate on which the manifold 7 is mounted. When the slag is first tapped water is supplied through both sets of nozzles 8, 9 but when the rate of flow of slag decreases the flow of water through one set of nozzles may be reduced or stopped.
