Abstract

358,196. Moving- map indicators for vehicles, ships, and trains. NICOHOSOFF, E., 5, Rue Fouad Ier, Alexandria, Egypt. Aug. 14, 1930, No. 24334. [Class 118 (i).] A moving-map indicator for railway or road vehicles or ships consists of a casing 2 with a front glass 5 having horizontal and vertical scales 7, 7a which intersect in a pointer mark 8 to indicate the position of the vehicle on a strip map moving behind the glass. This map bears a line 13 representing the route surrounded by features of interest or use shown in their true perpendicular distances according to the scales 7, 7a from the line 13, and is moved by an actuating roller 34 driven from the running gear of the vehicle. The lower half of the glass 5 may be coloured to distinguish the route traversed from that to come. Straight portions of the route are shown by straight lines in the margin 11 of the map, curves to the right being shown by displacing these lines to the left and joining the two straight portions by a quadrant 25 as shown in Fig. 1. For turnings a two-pronged fork is used instead of a quadrant, and curves or turnings to the left are shown by displacing the straight lines to the right. The level portions of the route are shown by lines 32 in margin 11a parallel to line 13, high levels being on the left and low on the right, the slanting lines 33 joining these indicating the slopes. The perpendiculars from surrounding features meet line 13 in points corresponding to the feet of corresponding perpendiculars in the ordinary map shown, Fig. 3, except for turnings such as 15a in which the corresponding points are the intersections of route 13 with lines joining the points to the inner corner 29 of the turning. Small pins 60 inserted in the map cause contacts 63 to touch momentarily and thus ring the alarm bell 69 at fixed points. The map may be endless or may extend between spring barrels 37, 38, and in this case when all the map is wrapped on barrel 38 it may be removed and a fresh barrel and map substituted.
