Abstract
357,051. Making paper bags &c. ROWLES, S. G., Kethro, St. John's Road, Orping- ton, Kent, and FENDER, P. R., 85, Philbeach Gardens, Earl's Court, London. Jan. 24, 1931, No. 2393. [Class 94 (ii).] In applying a turned-over end or a transverse fold to a paper web or tube in paper bag &c. making by means of rotary folders comprising a slotted cylinder housing a movable nipping element and a coacting cylinder provided with a reciprocating tucking blade, the nipping element normally presses against the leading edge of the folding g slot, and co-operates with means which cause it to open momentarily for the tucking operation, to close for nipping while the slot cylinder makes a partial rotation and then to open momentarily for releasing the folded end. A rigid bar or nipper 17 is maintained in contact with the leading edge of a slot 16 in a cylinder S by a spring-pressed curved lever 22, Fig. 5, pivoted at 23 to an arm 21 rigidly secured to the bar which is rotatably mounted in the ends of the cylinder S. A tucking cylinder T, associated with the cylinder S, carries a double cam 25 having humps spaced apart so as to depress the lever 22 and thereby open the nipper 17 in the rotation of the cylinder S at successive points less than a quarter of a revolution apart. The tucking cylinder T rotates about a fixed shaft 7 provided with two cams 8 and is provided with a tucking blade 1 secured to a holder 2 adjustably mounted in a slot 3 in the cylinder, the holder 2 being drawn against the cams 8 by springs 9. As the cylinder T rotates, the cams 8 thrust out the blade 1 and tuck the paper tube into the slot at the moment when the nipper bar 17 is displaced from the edge 16 of the slot, withdrawing the blade as the nippers close. To ensure exact co-operation, the shaft 7 is adjustable in the machine frame F over a small angle. If the bag end is to be gummed, a pasting blade 14 on the cylinder T, collects gum from a roller 15 in a trough P and applies it to the blank immediately prior to the folding. The cylinder T is driven from the shaft of the cylinder S and the cylinder S is adjustably mounted on its shaft to permit it to be set independently of its drive.
