Abstract

<PICT:0356926/III/1> Disperse systems in which the dispersion medium is a liquid and the dispersed phase is a liquid or gas are separated into their constituents by treatment with violet or ultra-violet light, X-rays, cathode rays, canal rays, or radiation from radioactive substances. The dispersion preferably flows in a thin film past the source of radiation, which may be intensified by the use of reflectors, and the constituents are subsequently separated by gravitation. The Figure shows an apparatus suitable for the treatment of a petroleum-water emulsion, which is fed by a pipe 3 on to an inclined surface 2 where it is subjected to ultra-violet light from the lamp 6 backed by reflectors 8. The liquid may be recirculated by the pipe 11 until the emulsion is sufficiently broken to permit of gravitational separation in the settling tank 15. The invention is also applicable to the destruction of foam, and the formation of foam during chemical processes may be prevented by subjecting the reacting substances to irradiation.
