Abstract

Higher aliphatic alcohols, containing at least six carbon atoms, are produced by reduction of esters of the corresponding acids by hydrogen under pressure at 300-400 DEG C. in presence of a catalyst comprising finely divided copper. The copper may be used on a carrier such as kieselguhr, and the pressure may be 100-200 atmospheres. An example describes the production of lauryl alcohol from the ethyl ester of lauric acid at 350 DEG C. Instead of ethyl laurate, the mixture obtained by esterifying with ethyl alcohol or other lower aliphatic alcohol the mixed fatty acids from coco nut oil, may be employed. The glyceryl esters of the higher fatty acids may also be used. The products may be used in the textile finishing industry; in particular they are readily sulphonated, since their non-alcoholic contents are almost entirely capable of sulphonation and may include unsaturated compounds.
