355,311. Making porous sheets &c. of hardened plastic substances. SOC. ITALIANA PIRELLI, 21, Via Fabio Filzi, Milan, Italy. April 22, 1930, No. 12452. Convention date, April 22, 1929. [Class 87 (ii).] Sheets of rubber, or other plastic substance which can be hardened, such as that known under the Trade Mark " Bakelite," are pierced with fine perforations of the order of 0À1-0À2 mm. diameter while in the unhardened condition and are then hardened as by vulcanization or by heat treatment. If desired, the sheet, while unhardened, may be placed on a former to impart the required shape and may be hardened in position. The perforations may be pierced by tools 4 while the sheet 6 is supported on a resilient pad 5 to protect the tool points, a sheet of paper &c. 7, being placed over the plastic sheet to facilitate the removal of the pierced sheet from the tools. The piercing tools may be in the form of file card wires, and both pressing members may be provided with piercing tools in staggered relation so that the sheet is pierced simultaneously from opposite sides. Various forms of perforations are described. The application of the perforated sheets to the manufacture of a tubular separator for an electric battery is referred to.
