340,936. Discharge apparatus. DICKER, S. G. S., 20, Holborn, London.- (Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken, 6, Emmasingel, Eindhoven Holland.) Sept. 30, 1929, No. 29567. [Class 39 (i).] In tubes in which an electron discharge flows from a cold cathode 4 having sharp protuberances, the active surface of this cathode 4 is a surface generated by revolution, or by revolution combined with rotation, of a plane figure such that the surface has sharp ribs, the anode 2 following in general form the cathode 4 but being smooth. In a rectifier suitable for highvoltage supply to X-ray tubes, a ferrochrome anode 2 is spaced by a few mm. from a ferrochrome cylinder 3 having a cathode surface 4 of aluminium or other material emitting electrons more easily than ferrochrome, the surface 4 being provided with sharp circular teeth or screw threads on a lathe. A hollow lead 7 facilitates cooling the cathode. The relative position of the electrodes may be observed through a glass window 8. The glass-metal seals have metal screens 9 .. 11. The tube is exhausted sufficiently to avoid gas ionization, a scavenging gas being used if desired. The cathode may be entirely of aluminium and may be semi-cylindrical or spherical. Part of the screw threads may be omitted. In another modification, the electrodes are conical and are moved axially to adjust their spacing. The tube may be gas-filled.
