[Class 51 (i).] In a step-grate of the kind comprising overlapping rows of reciprocating bars, the bars of each row reciprocate in the same sense and adjacent elements of each row are relatively displaced longitudinally by the resistance of the fuel or by mechanical means. In the form of grate shown in Fig. 1, in which the relative movement of the bars is effected by resistance of the fuel, adjacent rows of grate bars are moved in opposite directions by frames a and each row comprises alternate bars c provided with claws engaging with brackets d with longitudinal play and with bosses e. The intermediate bars f have claws engaging closely with the brackets d and stops g adapted to engage the bosses e of the bars c in the row below. Fig. 5 shows a form of grate in which displacement of adjacent bars is effected mechanically. The bars i, k of each row engage alternately with upper and lower members m, l of brackets h, which have a combined turning and swinging movement causing the bars i, k to be relatively displaced at the ends of their stroke while in the middle positions they are in alignment.
