Abstract
Alkylene cyanhydrins are obtained by acting with alkylene oxides on dispersions of alkali metal or alkaline-earth metal cyanides, in solvents containing hydroxyl groups, e.g. water, alcohols, aqueous alcohols. The cyanide may be continuously or intermittently regenerated by leading hydrocyanic acid into the solution or suspension of hydroxide formed by the reaction, or the initial material may be a solution or suspension of the corresponding hydroxide, which is converted to cyanide by means of hydrocyanic acid. The temperatures of working are generally between 10 DEG and 70 DEG C. The cyanhydrins may be saponified to give the corresponding hydroxy carboxylic acids. Examples are given of the treatment of ethylene, propylene, and butylene oxides, glycide, and epichlorhydrin, as described above.
