Abstract
344,162. Direct-driven air compressors. BINARD, J. P., 29, Rue Mogador, Gravelines, Nord, France. Jan. 30, 1930, No. 3258. Convention date, Feb. 1, 1929. [Class 8 (i).] An air compressor 3 is directly driven by an internal-combustion engine 1. On the downstroke of the piston 4, the arm 12 engaging the rack 19 opens the relief valve 14, enabling air below the I.C. piston to escape. When the lug 21 engages the finger 15, valve 14 is closed and the enclosed air compressed, fuel being supplied by the injector 10 when the lug 20 engages the device 5. Explosion taking place by spontaneous combustion, the piston rises till the exhaust port 43 is uncovered. Air compressed in the cylinder 3, first escapes through valve 28 for scavenging the cylinder 1 ; after this valve e is covered the compressed air passes to the storage tank through the pipe 34. To enable the piston to be cushioned when the storage tank pressure is low valve 35 has an inclined row of holes 36. Thus when the air pressure in cylinder 3 rises, the valve is forced upwards and most of the holes 36 will be covered, air only escaping slowly to the pipe 34. When the storage pressure rises, this, acting on the inside surface of the valve will assist the spring 38. Control may be effected by throttling the initial air supply to the cylinder 3 by throttle 31, thus retarding the speed of fall of the piston. To start the engine compressed air is supplied to the valve 42. Should the piston make an overstroke, the lug 20 engaging the cam 50 will release the finger 25, and this, meeting lug 20 will prevent the return stroke.
