Abstract
332,231. British Celanese, Ltd., and Ellis, G. H. Jan. 5, 1929. Yarns &c., treating with gases and vapours.- Yarns, fabrics, &c. made of or containing filaments &c. of artificial silk &c. produced from solutions of cellulose esters or ethers have their lustre increased, or restored, or they are protected from the delustring effect of hot aqueous media, by treatment with dry or substantially dry steam. The process is applicable to cellulose acetate, formate, propionate, butyrate &c., ethyl, methyl, or benzyl cellulose or the corresponding condensation products of cellulose and glycols or other polyhydric alcohols, and to such materials in association with cotton, artificial silk, wool or silk. The cellulose acetate products may be flat, round, semi. round, "tubular" or "voluminous." The yarns &c. may be stretched before, during the commencement of, or throughout the steaming, to an extent which may be beyond the elastic limit. The steaming may be continuous with the production of the filaments &c., thus after leaving the cells in dry spinning or the precipitating bath in wet spinning they may pass, with or without drying, to a steaming chamber. The treatment may be assisted by solvents or gelling agents for the cellulose derivatives as is described in Specification 332,187. In an example, cellulose acetate knitted fabric is treated with steam at 20 pounds per square inch in excess of atmospheric pressure, at a temperature of 137‹ C. Specification 269,605 also is referred to.
