Latches, preventing operation of.-Locking mechanism carried by the main lock case or the handle prevents rotation of the handle shank whilst permitting a certain amount of lateral or axial movement to enable the shank to lie out of normal with the door. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the square shank C engages a slot in a plate engaged by fingers f<3> permitting movement of the plate transverse to its slot. The fingers form part of a plate F having a recess f<2> engaged by a stop e<2> and a recess f<1> engaged by a disc G having a recess g<3> to permit rotation of the plate F. The plate G has a recess g<2> engaged by a stop e<3> and a lug g<1> engaged by a finger j carried by the pin-tumbler barrel. In the other forms, the shank C has a spherical enlargement m forming the pivot. In Fig. 7, the shank carries a lock with bolt s engaging a groove u in a block t mounted in the casing, while in Fig. 10 the lock 18 is mounted in the casing and its bolt 19 engages a groove in the sphere. In Fig. 13, the bolt 37 of a lock mounted in the shank enters a plate 32 rotating in a groove on the shank and engaged between fingers 31 of a plate 28 mounted between transverse fingers on the casing.
